Teaching important life-skills to youths with disabilities through cooking classes.
Big Spoon Lil’ Spoon is an organization that started at Queens University last year. The program has had big success in the past year, getting support from organizations like SWAM Kingston, Me-to-We, Autism Ontario and becoming official partners with the Down Syndrome Association in Kingston. Due to its great success, Big Spoon Lil’ Spoon has now expanded to Toronto, partnering with the University of Toronto.
The program emphasizes on teaching important life-skills to youths with disabilities through cooking classes. The Big Spoon ‘Lil Spoon program pairs each child with a university student with whom they will work together during each cooking class to create a different meal each week Throughout the semester, we strive for the child and the university student to create a “sibling” type bond, and that the child takes away some important life-skills that will open up many opportunities for them in the future.
The cooking classes will start in September and will be held on a weekly basis. Although the day of the week and time aren’t set in concrete yet, we hope to hold the classes on Friday afternoons, but may also hold the classes on Saturday and Sunday depending on everyone’s availability. The classes will be held at Loblaws, located at 60 Carlton Street. Finally, the Big Spoon Lil’ Spoon program will have a fee of $35 per semester.
