Government Releases Long-Term Vision for Developmental Services Reform

Earlier today, Children, Community, and Social Services Minister Todd Smith released “Journey to Belonging: Choice and Inclusion”. This document is the government’s long-term vision for how to improve developmental services in Ontario. It was informed by consultations with people across the province, including the facilitated consultation many Community Living Toronto (CLTO) members took part in recently. Community Living Toronto CEO Brad Saunders was also part of the stakeholder table that informed this document.

As you’ll read in the document, this is a long and complex process that will evolve over the next decade. Releasing this document is a critical first step toward better services and supports. While still early days, we are encouraged by the province’s commitment to immediate reform, including improving intake and assessment processes, reviewing the temporary Passport regulations to improve the program in the long-term, and streamlining administration for agencies like CLTO.  We look forward to working with the provincial government to better recognize and support people with intellectual disabilities and improve the developmental services sector across the province.
