Disability and the Global South: Lessons Learned from Africa

Please join us for the hybrid public talk “Disability and the Global South: Lessons Learned from Africa” with Dr. Brent Elder hosted by Karen Soldatic, Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Health Equity and Community Wellbeing and professor in the School of Disability Studies at Toronto Metropolitan University. The talk will be followed by a Panel Discussion with Mapheyeledi Motimele and Dr. Funke Oba. This event is free and open to the public.

Join Dr. Elder as he shares insights from his international work in inclusive education. Using a compelling case study from Kenya, Dr. Elder will discuss the successes and challenges of community-based participatory research in Kenya, including navigating neocolonial tensions, insider-outsider dynamics in decolonizing inclusive “development”, and collaborating with government ministries. Dr. Elder will speak to the realities of conducting transnational Critical Disability Studies informed research in under-resourced settings.
