Hi Everyone,
I hope you are well.
I have an unusual request.
I have been invited to speak on a syndicated radio show across Canada and U.S. called Family Caregivers Unite about caring for my daughter over the years and moving her towards independence. There is no fee for me or other guests. Link is below for further information about the program, including previous podcasts and Dr. Atherley with whom I have been in contact with. I was connected to him by a colleague who is involved in starting a home like the Reena building for people with mental health issues called Home on the Hill.
I had told Dr. Atherley about my daughter’s new residence and he thought it would be a good idea to bring on with me someone from Reena. I told him that it would be far more powerful to have another parent on, whose adult child is at home and not living a productive life so that the audience can understand the hardship such a thing has on the person with the disability and their family. The childs name would not be mentioned. They are pretaping on May 20 (It is Victoria Day here but because it is done in U.S. that is not a holiday) for airing on May 28 and we do it by phone so a convenient time for both of us could be worked out. Dr. Atherley would send the questions beforehand, so the answers can be perfected and nothing would be a surprise when he asks you questions.
The benefit for the parent could be getting some solutions from listeners to help with problems and the knowledge that you are not alone. It might also be a way to make new supportive connections with other parents in the same situation. Of course there is always getting 15 minutes of fame so to speak!
Please let me know if this is something that one of you parents might be willing to participate in you as quickly as possible, because they do a lot of prepatory work .

I took a quick look at some of the other topics he’s discussed and guests he’s had on in the past and it looks like there is good info being shared…I’m sure the interview with you and others will touch many for sure. I’d be interested to hear if there is any interest from any parents engaged with LIGHTS who would be interested in participating…keep me posted – I’ll want to tune in! By the way Heather…can you share a little bit about where your daughter is living? I didin’t know she moved out!
