McDonald’s is hiring more than 6,000 people on Thursday. The one-day hiring blitz is being held on the third annual National Hiring Day held by McDonald’s. Job seekers are being invited to apply in person at their local McDonald’s for the 6,000 crew and 100 manager positions.
Applicants could possibly be interviewed “on the spot” by a member of the restaurant management team, the fast-food chain said in a news release. Those unable to apply in person can go to http://www.worksforme.ca to submit their applications. McDonald’s Restaurants of Canada and its franchisees say they are “doing their part” to help alleviate the youth unemployment rate. The national unemployment rate as of March 2013 was 7.2 but it was 14.2 per cent among youths aged 15 to 24, according to Statistics Canada. Since 2011, McDonald’s has hired close to 10,000 people across the country through the one-day event. The company says this will be the biggest hiring year yet, noting it will hire 1,000 more than it did last year, when it hired 5,000 and 2,000 more than the 4,000 people it hired in 2011. McDonald’s is one of Canada’s largest employers of youth, with about 65 per cent of the crew in the 15-24 age group. The company says teenagers make up the largest employee demographic, representing about 42 per cent of the company’s workforce. “In an era when staying with one company is rarely seen, McDonald’s Canada has a long history of building bright futures for young people from the ground up,” the company said in a statement.
McDonald’s points out that 90 per cent of managers and 50 per cent of franchisees began as entry-level crew members. In fact, the company notes, McDonald’s Canada president and CEO John Betts started behind the counter 40 years ago. The company says it offers competitive wages and a comprehensive benefits package along with flexible work schedules. The fast-food operator has more than 1,400 restaurants across Canada and employ more than 80,000 people.
