Our family is looking for a Peer Roomate for our son, James.

James is 25 years old and has Down syndrome. He is living in a three-bedroom house very close to the Dufferin Subway. The house is very close to Dufferin Grove Park, the NoFrills, and the TTC subway, and it has a nice backyard. He has a responsible adult “supportive” roommate who lives in separate rooms in the basement, very kind and welcoming neighbours, and family that lives nearby.

James is looking for a peer roommate to join his house. He is hoping to find someone with compatible interests, who is also interested in being a friend. James’ family imagines that his peer roommate will, like James, need some light support to live independently.

The room that is available is large and bright, and there is a large shared living room and dining room. For now, there is also a guest bedroom to be used by friends and family that want to visit or help with the transition.

The cost is $1,200/month including the utilities and internet and a monthly cleaning service. Depending on the amount of support the roommate requires, it may be appropriate to contribute to the supportive roommate who lives in the basement rooms (to be discussed). James will be ready to have someone join him in September, but there is no rush.

About James: He is a very comfortable and sociable guy. He is gentle and likes to say encouraging words to other people. Wherever he goes, he runs into people that know and like him.

He has a job that he goes to every day and has activities like Special Olympics swimming, dancing, and floor hockey in the evenings. He likes to play video games and to practice his singing (esp Bruno Mars songs ). He is reasonably independent but needs reminders to do his household chores and to eat healthy food. Most of his meal preparation is done for him, or he would eat only pizza and sushi.
