Learning Day Program

The Community of Hearts Lifelong Learning Centre hosts high-quality programming each day. Our facilitators and volunteers are highly trained and caring individuals with a vast variety of experiences working with diverse populations.

Community of Hearts provides an inclusive and safe learning environment where participants are encouraged to work towards independence and self-reliance both in the program and beyond. The Learning Day Program operates Monday to Friday, from 9 am until 3 pm and is focused on creating experiences for participants to continue learning, growing, and engaging in the community around them. Each day is full of opportunities for developing healthy social interactions and conversations as well as engaging, responsive project and subject-based experiences.

Here are just some of the learning areas we are exploring this semester:

Representation In Media
Explore media such as a show, movie or article and use critical thinking to discuss the themes

Countries and Culture
Explore places, spaces and traditions around the world.

Fitness and Wellness 
Support your mental, physical and emotional wellness through fitness, stress management tools, and mindfullness strategies.

Meal Preparation Cooking
Gain the confidence you need to prepare and cook healthy meals for yourself and others!

Friendships and Dating
Develop and practice social skills for friendships, dating and professional settings

Nature Studies
Learn about animals, plants and nature from in our community and around the world.

Art for Wellness 
Explore art practices for personal wellness, enjoyment and collaboration.

Safe and Healthy Home Routines 
Develop skills for keeping your room and home safe and healthy through our home routines.

Job Skills Development
Develop your job skills and build up your job-readiness

This program is suitable for you if:

Independence 

✔ I participate fully without intense levels of supervision

✔ I can move about a facility independently (or with a Direct Support Professional present)

✔ I can eat and toilet independently (or with a Direct Support Professional present)

✔ I am 16+ years of age (I have completed available education system programs and demonstrate maturity; or I am attending for the purposes of attaining Ontario Secondary School Diploma credits through a high school co-op placement)

✔ I possess communication skills that permit relationship building

✔ I want to learn/gain skills necessary for practical and social activities of daily living

Ready, Willing and Able to Be Part of a Group 

✔ I am willing to learn to interact appropriately within a group

✔ I am willing to connect with others and benefit from peer relationships

Support for Success is Present 

✔ My guardians/caregivers/formal supports are invested and prepared to be involved in supporting an individual plan for my success

✔ My guardians/caregivers/formal supports recognize the benefits of independence for me, are capable of being flexible and accept uncertainties along the learning journey

✔ My guardians/caregivers/formal supports are ready to partner with Community of Hearts staff and volunteers to support my best interests

Community of Hearts

Founded in 2012, Community of Hearts is a not-for-profit, charitable organization in Guelph supporting youth, adults and seniors with developmental disabilities to achieve the level of independence they desire. Through curriculum-based quality programming, a person centred focus, as well as relevant and responsive opportunities we support our participants to build self confidence, self advocacy and become more engaged members in the community.
