My daugher is 36 years old and I am 65.
Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about how she will live her life after I’m gone or incapacitated. Boy, that sounds depressing!
We’ve met with Lights and have a profile but haven’t really done much exploring since.
Mary is non-verbal, delayed, fun and social. Me, not so much .
Is anyone else out there interested in getting together to discuss long range plans for their child who might have similar needs (24 supervision, food management, transportation support etc.)? I want to be very involved in her life, as do her siblings, but think it would be best to establish Mary in her own home.July 15, 2012 at 3:45 pm #17990HI
Not sure were you are situated, but you should come out to the Scarborough Residential Meetings and meet other families who are looking for the same thing. We meet the first tuesday of the month from October to June. In September we are having an Independent living conference, on the 15th at CLToronto, 1712 Ellesmere Rd Toronto. Its at the corner of McCowan and Ellesmere. This is also where we have our meetings.
July 16, 2012 at 9:14 am #17991It’s awesome to hear that you want to start exploring options further!! It’s so important for families to chat and explore together what might work for their loved ones! LIGHTS will be hosting a evening in September for families to do just that. We will also be inviting your children to attend and facilitate a chat/activities around what it means to “get your own place”. Watch for a flyer coming out soon!

August 13, 2012 at 5:22 pm #17995Hi
Scarborough Residential is having a conference on Sat Sept 15, from 930 to 430, at Community Living Toronto. There is a conference for parents/caregivers and one for self advocates. This is a great way to start you investigation into setting Mary up in a home of her own. Check it out at sralternatives.weebly.com.
Hope to see you and Mary there. Bonnie -
