STEPS To Independence is a guidebook to explore readiness for supported independent living. It is a holistic tool to prepare someone for supported independent living; building skills, confidence and self-esteem. It presents feedback on current life skills and identifies any areas for learning to increase readiness. It will also offer opportunities to share differing perspectives on knowledge, skills and readiness from the perspective of the person, their family and others who know the person well (such as teachers, occupational therapist, community workers).
Community Living Toronto is presently conducting a pilot of the guide. Once the guide is finalized, the guide and the results of the pilot will be posted on ConnectABILITY with a discussion on Connected Families.

I like how you think Jenna! Right now we are just getting ready to start the STEPS To Independence pilot project (from April 1st to June 30th). This way we will have an opportunity to “test” the guidebook out first and make any changes/additions based on feedback from the pilot. I was just wondering how easy it is to find accommodation for those ready to live independantly. I have a 3 bedroom condo located at Yonge & Steeles right by Centerpoint Mall. The condominium is 5 minutes walk to Centerpoint Mall and there are a lot of amenities around the area. The location is very nice, safe and quiet laid back neighbourhood. I wanted to advertise the condo, but just thought it would be nice to offer it in our circle first before publicising it. It’s available from September 1st so there is roughly 2 months to prepare for those getting ready to share. It is on the 3rd floor of a 18 floor building. I also live just 3 minutes walk away from the condominium complex in a house for any requirements. Anyway just a thought.

My 20 year old son lives in Newmarket near me, but needs to find a place that is more affordable. I would love to come and take a look before approaching him about this condo. Would that be possible? He receives SIL support through York Region so I am unsure if this area would still be within their boundary. Something I’d need to check.

I am so sorry I honestly didn’t see your response otherwise I would have responded immediately!!
I normally receive an email if there is a posting to a topic I have subscribed to but for some reason I didn’t get it for your email, anyway after more than a week with no response from anyone I assumed no one was interested so I put it on Kijiji and in 3 days in was viewed and taken. Sorry about that!!

I think it’s great to have Step to Independce Guidebook to read on the Airplane while traveling because they can for sure take a while for landing. I think it will be great if this Guidebook gose Online to I-Tunes soon when this piolt project in finalized.

Travelling On My Own
Community Living Toronto’s Ambassador Jenna Martinuzzi took the TTC on her own for the first time this morning. Here, she shares her experience:
Today, do you know how I got to my job at Community Living Toronto at 20 Spadina? I took TTC on my own for the very first time. I bet you wonder how I did it?
I took the bus to the Finch Subway and got on the subway going South. Before I got on the subway, I texted my coworker that I was getting on.
When I got to Bloor Station I had to switch to go to Spadina. This is a very busy station. I got mixed up and I came upstairs outside at Bloor Station, but I found my way back in and down to the Bloor trains. I asked someone on the Bloor train if this takes me to Community Living Toronto at Bloor and Spadina and they said yes.
When I got to the office and to my desk I was excited to tell everyone that I did it on my own. They all smiled and gave me high fives and said, way to go. They said they were proud of me and knew I could do it. I almost forgot to call my mom and tell her I made it. She was worried. She called a coworker to check up on me.
I learned a lot today. It is great to ask people questions like what trains to get on when traveling on the subway because you are surrounded by a lot of nice, helpful people on transit in Toronto.
Some of the things I did to make sure I was going the right way was to ask other riders if this the right train. I also looked on my I-Phone app for the map in between stops. The App is called My Toronto and has a map with all the routes and all of the stops
I got there on my own and it felt great!
