My son is 20 years old and living on his own (with SIL support) in an apartment that is far too expensive. It would be great to find someone around his age and level of independence to share rent/utilities with. He moved to Newmarket last fall and has been reluctant to reach out and meet new people or connect with the community. He wants to move to an apartment that has a more accessible bus route, around Yonge St. My hope is there may be a compatible roommate out there also looking.

I agree living with a SIL support worker in a aparment is way to expensive. I have a friend who just moved around this area recently. I also visit my dad and his Girlfriend Cheryl who lives in the area too. I am coming to visit my dad this weekend. I just wanted to share my expereinces and stories with you. I have disabilty and I love metting new people too. I just wanted to wish your son good luck with his new home in Newmarket.

            Hi MAF

you said your son was looking for a place around Yonge st. I know you said he lives in Newmarket, but there is a post under steps to independence about a condo a Yonge and Steele. Might be something he’d be interested in.
Were you by any chance part of the Try Another Way with Community Living? They might be able to help find a roommate. I can send you a contact if you weren’t.
Another idea, if you are near a college or university is a student to rent the other bedroom. It wouldn’t be for support, just to help share costs.

Thanks Bonnie. Something to look into, for sure. My son was part of Try Another Way but he wasn’t cooperative and didn’t stay in the program.

Too bad, but not all programs are for all people. I would still reconnect with them and see if they know of someone who is looking in Newmarket.
Also I am going to send it to a Family Alliance Network in Newmarket and they can send it out to their families.
