(DSO Housing Navigator)This looks like a wonderful opportunity, I will share with a colleague who has been planning with some families here in Toronto!
Alex Shannan here again, Housing Navigator with DSO in Toronto. During our webinars and when I connect with people by phone or email, people often ask for help with finding others in their local community/neighbourhood, who are looking to start a family group around housing or looking for people to plan with around housing and supports. With Connected Families, you can register and create a username that doesn’t reveal who you are (for example: Snowshoes). You can make posts publicly to share a little about who you are, what part of the province/city you live in (for example: Toronto – East End or Hamilton – Downtown). By clicking on a username, next to a post, you can then send other users’ private messages which only that person will be able to see. This can let you speak with the person to see if you have things in common and before deciding if you want to exchange more personal information, like your email address or phone number.
If you are looking to meet others in your area, to talk or plan around housing and supports, you might consider adding a note to this thread to see if there are others in your area who might be looking for the same thing.
Hi All,
I received a note this week from a Special Needs Consultant/Facilitator working in several regions but currently working with a few families in the Peel region who are looking to connect with other families who may want to begin to discuss housing options. One family in particular is looking for a family home model. This person was looking for an active platform to connect with other families (not necessarily in the region of Peel) to discuss what creative housing options may be available through collaboration. I thought I would post here, in case it was of interest to folks here…
Also, for those who may be interested, Christian Horizons is curently offering a How to Be a Good Roommate virtual workshop, details are available here: https://ca.apm.activecommunities.com/mycommunityhub/Activity_Search/10525

It’s so wonderful to see people sharing about their personal experiences and the desire to connect! I hope we can get more people using this forum this year.
Thought I’d share the latest newsletter from the Centre for Equality Rights in Accommodation (CERA). It focusses on 4 areas they will be watching closely this year, related to advancements for the right for affordable housing: https://www.equalityrights.org/cera-blog/4-ways-to-advance-the-right-to-housing-in-2021
Hi Rose, thanks for introducing yourself! I too look forward to seeing if we can use this forum as a way to connect, network and share resources. You are right, we have made some updates to the DSO Housing Toolkit (https://www.dsontario.ca/resources/housing/welcome-to-the-dso-housing-toolkit). Updates include (but are not limited to) the addition of an Excel budgeting tool and changes to the My housing and support plan document. We are currently working on a Podcast series and are looking forward to further improving the Toolkit in the new year.
If there are particular topics that people are interested in, or resources you would like to see included here, please share.
I send a weekly email with this list of “affordable” rentals, if anyone is interested in being added to the list of recipients, send me an email: alexandra.shannan@surreyplace.ca.
It’s important to remember that the list is compiled based on the cost of the rental and no pre-screening is completed, prior to adding the listing to the list.
Hi Angelica,
Thanks for sharing and adding to the thread!
Alex
Hi Bruce,
I have spoken to a few other families in the past serveral weeks, who are in a similar position with regards to their concern and eagerness to get things moving.
Is there a specific geographic area/neighbourhood of Toronto that your son is looking to move to? I wonder if there may be others with similar intentions. Perhaps they’ll join in here.Hi Bonnie and Petra! Thanks for adding to the conversation 🙂

Thanks for the feedback and your interest in getting together for a follow-up session. I agree, I think Connected Families could be a very useful way for like-minded people to connect with one another. I will create a broader thread in the Housing forum and will continue to encourage those I’m connecting with to join the conversation! Feel free to share with those in your circle!
